Jinxx Reports from Warped Tour

Warped Tour is hot. Well, that's been determined.

But other than that

We commenced our debut on the Vans' Warped Tour this year a little deviated from what was planned, as we were unable to perform for the first week. Just a couple days before leaving for the tour, our singer took an intense dive off a 20-foot pillar during our record-release performance in Hollywood, shattering three of his ribs and nearly puncturing his lung.

We spent the first week of the tour doing meet-and-greets and selling merch for our fans while he was in recovery back in LA, waiting for word on his condition and whether or not we would be able to perform on the tour at all this summer. Once given a clean bill of health (i.e. not giving a fuck and ignoring medical advice not to perform for three months), our trooper of a singer rejoined us in Pomona, California, and we were back in business!

Warped Tour crowds are different than any crowd we would normally play in front of, say if it were a headlining tour or a metal tour. I'm pretty sure most people aren't there to see us. At times it seems as though we are the goth kids in the lunch room that no one wants to sit next to.

The macabre makeup, the studs, the black leather might be a bit much for all the kids who were too young to have experienced "Shout at the Devil"-era Motley Crue or a little band called Kiss.

It's no wonder if they are put off by our appearance when their heros dress like everyday Joes who just clocked-off at Taco Bell. But the instant we start playing, a dark chord is struck in all their hearts and their rhythms beat to a different tune rather quickly.

I must say probably the best thing about playing Warped is winning over people who would not normally like us, solely based on judgment of our looks before our music.

At the end of every long, hot day on Warped, all the bands gather around their buses (There are some 90 buses altogether on this tour!) and socialize in barbecues very reminiscent of the days I spent growing up in trailer parks in the Midwest, lounging in lawn chairs, drinking beer and grilling burgers and hot dogs.

This is where all the band members are supposed to 'make friends' with one another's band mates and every one becomes one big happy family. To make that high school reference once again, I felt at first we weren't going to be accepted into the popular "clique" in the "lunch room"; that we were gonna be THAT band no one wanted to associate with on the tour. You know, the "goth" kids in the corner.

But more and more members from all the bands have been warming up to us and extending the olive branch, telling us they enjoyed our set. Outcasts or not, we're all here for the same purpose: to make music and entertain.

All in all, Warped Tour has been an experience, to say the least, and NOT a bad one. And it keeps getting better and better every week. So far, we're having a good time. :)

Jinxx plays guitar in glam metal band Black Veil Brides, whose sophomore effort, Set The World On Fire, was released June 14 on Lava Records. The album was recently included on Guitar World's list of the 50 best albums of the first half of 2011.

BVB to 'Set World on Fire' with Major Label Debut

do not exactly have modest ambitions for their sophomore album. "This is going to be the best album anybody's ever made," founder and frontman Andy Six tells Billboard.com about "Set the World On Fire," which comes out June 14 as the glammy Los Angeles group's major label debut for Lava/Universal Republic.

In fact, Six (ne Biersack) labeled the demo CDs "Black Veil Brides' Greatest Hits" as the faux title for the 11-track set, explaining, "Every song is my favorite. I love them all in a way. Obviously there are going to be certain standout songs, but it's hard to tell what my favorite song is going to be until there's audience interaction, when you see fans sing along."

It was the dedicated BVBArmy, in fact, that inspired Six's songwriting for "Set the World on Fire." "Ultimately, the influence for the second record was very much shaped by fan reaction for the first record," 2009's "We Stitch These Wounds," which topped the Billboard Independent Albums chart, Six explains. "Over the last year we've seen so much and done so much, meeting people and hearing their stories, you can't help but be affected...So musically and lyrically we tried to shape our second record based off those feelings and those emotions.

"I still love those songs on the first record," Six adds, "but these songs to me are so much better. I feel them in a way I didn't on the first record. This is an adult writing songs this time. Everything is bigger -- more songs, more vocals, more melodies. And it all came naturally; it's not an attempt to try to outdo our first record, but we wanted to show how we had naturally grown as a band and as songwriters."

BVB made "Set the World on Fire" in California with Josh Abraham (Linkin Park, Velvet Revolver, 30 Seconds to Mars, Korn, Mastodon), who was the first producer they interviewed for the project. "That first meeting we wrote (the title track)," Six recalls, "and we immediately just canceled all our other meetings and went with Josh and his team." The song will also appear in Wes Craven's "Scream 4."

The album's first single, "Fallen Angels," is due out May 3 on iTunes, with a video filmed in Los Angeles with director Nathan Cox. The song was inspired by a biblical story introduced by BVB cover artist Richard Villa, according to Six. "He's very much into biblical stories," Six says, "and he found the whole story of the fallen angels who were the ultimate outcasts. They weren't sent to hell, but they weren't allowed in heaven. They had nowhere to go. They weren't human, either, so they had this lonely existence. They wound up banding together and creating their own gang of sorts. We really liked that and wound up writing a song very much based on how we could equate that to our lives."

BVB has been road-testing some of "Set the World on Fire's" songs during its headlining run on the AP Tour, which wraps up May 6 in Cleveland. The group will perform at the Bamboozle Music Festival on May 1 in East Rutherford, N.J., and at Rock on the Range on May 21 in Columbus, Ohio -- along with other festival dates in the U.S. and Europe -- before heading out on the Vans Warped Tour starting June 24 in Dallas.

Here's a bit of news that managed to quietly slip by a while back that will probably make some of you happy. In an October interview with the metal site Gun Shy Assassin, Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Six announced that band would be playing Warped Tour.

Specifically, as he was giving the rundown for all of the band's tour dates in 2011, he mentioned Warped Tour, telling the interviewer that the band was "excited about that."

Hollywood, Calif. natives, Black Veil Brides made their grand entrance to the Monster Stage with a thundering drumroll that ignited an uproar of fanatic screams.

Their army of followers dressed in black with smears of dark makeup running down their faces broke into ferocious yelps as BVB screamed, We have one job to do today and that is to bring back real f**king rock roll!

First glances of the five-piece metal/hardcore/emo/scream0 label them what you want, they dont give a f**k might have you wondering if theyre the new poster children for Hot Topic with goth-inspired gear and makeup.

But once you get past their looks, all youre left with is rapid fire drumming, intense guitar solos and heavy breakdowns. Its no wonder this relatively new band is a growing favorite in the metal scene.

Theyre unapologetic in their fashion expression and remind their young fans that real rock roll is about doing whatever you feel like. Demonstrating their mantra, BVB tore apart the stage in a wild ending, smashing their guitars for a big to all the haters out there.

The mayhem continued even after the band exited the stage as roadies distributed the jagged pieces of the smashed guitar into the screaming hands of BVBs most hardcore fans as a trophy of real rock roll.
